What is Hannukah in a nutshell?

It is a holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire – The Syrian/Greeks had tried to force the people of Israel to accept Greek culture. Once the Jewish army led by Judah the Maccabee had driven the Greeks from the land they reclaimed the Holy Temple and the oil they used to light the temples menorah ended up lasting for 8 days.

How is it celebrated?

  • Menorah is lit in every household and place by a doorway or window
  • We eat oily foods which symbolise the oil that lasted for 8 days
  • We eat Suvganiot – jam filled doughnuts each night
  • We play a Dreidal game which is a four sided spinning top with Hebrew letters nun, gimmel, hey and shin which is an acronym for “nes gadol hayah sham” – a great miracle happened here
  • We give Hannukah gifts of money to children and charity
